Oooh there's been a little bit of life. Was surprised to see the front page has been updated. Haven't signed onto WLM in yonks, didn't see much point seeing a everyone else has ditched it. Facebook all the way these days (not that I spend much time there either). Mess with Skype doesn't quite have the same ring to it. Not sure you can even "mess" with it having only used it a couple of times.

Hello all.

Yep sorry. Polit discovered in order for it to work you have to also change the protocol number as well as the version or it would still tell you to update. I think Polit was using version 7.0 however and unmodified. I was interested to see if that also works on 8.5.

I can't remember but wasn't there an old version released which didn't ask you to update? I can't remember what version that was. I will look into it.

Have you tried the hex editing method? You don't need to set the compatibility mode for that.

INSTALLING/UNINSTALLING

What is the latest versions of Windows Live Messenger?
15.4.3508.1109

What are the system requirements?
Operating system: 32- or 64-bit version of Windows 7, or Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 and the Platform Update for Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2008 with Service Pack 2 and the Platform Update for Windows Server 2008.
Processor: 1.6 GHz or higher
Memory: 1 GB of RAM or higher
Resolution: 1024 576 minimum

Where can I download Windows Live Messenger?
Download it here
NOTE: It will by default download and install other programs in addition to Windows Live Messenger. If you wish to download Windows Live Messenger only select the bottom option to choose which programs to install.

How do I uninstall Windows Live Messenger?
Control Panel\Programs and Features
It is listed as "Windows Live Essentials"

ADD ONS

Is Mess Patch available?
No.

Is Messenger Plus Live available?
Yes (Website).

Is A-Patch available?
Yes (Website).

CUSTOMISATION

Where are emoticons/display pictures etc stored?
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\EMAIL ADDRESS\ObjectStore

Why does it show my full name?
Custom names are no longer in use. You now use the same name for Hotmail and Messenger.
To change your name click on your name in the messenger contact window and then select "Edit your name". This will take you to your profile page in which you can change your name.

How do I assign nicknames to my contacts?
Right click the contact you wish to amend the name and then click "Add a nickname".

Can I assign different sounds for each contact?
Yes. Right click the contact and then click "Choose sounds".

FUNCTIONALITY

How do I block a contact?
It is now referred to as "appearing offline" to a contact. Right click the contact you wish to block and then click "Appear offline to this contact".

OTHER

How do I use an older version of Windows Live Messenger?
This question doesn't really fit here but is asked numerous times.

To make version 6.2 or older work:
Open the old version in Hex Editor. Change the version number to the latest version and change the line which says "MSNP9" to "MSNP8".

To make WLM work:
Using Resource Hacker change the version number to the latest version.

It has also been suggested that you can set the compatibility mode to a lower version of Windows.

This should still work on a modified/patched messenger but do not use the compatibility mode method.

Please refer to this topic

If there are any additional questions you feel should be added let me know.

Interesting... can I ask what versions that was with? Am thinking of writing an up to date FAQ so this certainly will be added to it.

Awww msn_grin.gif . I guess you are right it was sort of like a family. I still use messenger daily (not ever really having got into Facebook) but purely for it's core functionality rather than "messing" with it. I was thinking of writing an up to date FAQ for WLM 15 considering the last FAQ was for version 7/7.5 and it's now totally changed. You never know people may google a question and this forum may then come up. Just need to come up with some questions, but with the lack of activity here not many questions have been asked.

I've never been an expert on the whole using old versions thing but I have a sneaky feeling anything prior to 7.0 no longer works.

You could try this but I don't think it will give you much joy http://forum.mess.be/index.php?s=&show...st&p=177922

Sorry for taking over a month to respond to this but I will reply now for any others who are confused about this. I have just installed the new messenger to notice the same thing. Instead of having people blocked you "appear offline" to them. You need to right click the contact and select "Appear offline to this person"

That's a little contradictory ha ha. Apple seems to be the way to go at the moment though. It appears to be quiet in the Microsoft world. Either that or I'm in the dark about any goings on.

I am still around msn_happy.gif

They got rid of display names? msn_surprised.gif To be honest I use my real name anyway and so do a lot of my contacts but still I can't see why they'd get rid of it

Downloaded it last night. To sign out go onto the social tab, click your picture. There you can choose your status and sign out. It took me a while to find out. I must admit it's not straight forward to use.

That's old location.

You need to look here

C:\Documents and Settings\my.name\Application Data\Local Settings\Microsoft\Messenger\email\ObjectStore

I think... I have Vista which is slightly different.

msn_surprised.gif Dwergs, good to see you msn_grin.gif . Pssst my name doesn't have an h in it msn_wink.gif . I totally agree with you Jase although the only other messenger client I've used is Yahoo but no one else had it so I didn't tend to bother with it. I no longer have it installed either. I have AIM but no account. It just came pre-installed on this laptop.

Facebook is good for sending the odd message to friends who you don't have messenger and I like noseying at people's photo's and just generally learning what they are up to these days. To actually have a conversation with someone though I prefer to use messenger. I've used the facebook IM a couple of times but I don't really like it.

I too just use WLM for its core functionality these days.

Good that you've deleted a ton of accounts Dwergs, there's no end of spam accounts but all I can do is suspend them. Some spam accounts however have made numerous posts.

It's a Plus thing. I was just having a look around the options but couldnt find it. It certainly used to be there. You will only appear as idle to other people if they too have Plus installed.

Edit: found it... Plus > Preferences & Options > Messenger > Contact List

As regards your boyfriend showing as away I don't know. The only thing I can find similar is this in the main messenger options but suggests to show as busy instead.

Don't use online block/delete checkers. They don't work. I would have thought the messenger list will be more reliable.

I don't like the contact list. I guess the highlights it's like the What's new thing. I haven't got the whats new showing. The all/available/more/add etc seems rather large too. I see they've now added tabbed chats?

I guess though it's like when version 14 came out I didn't like it. I've now got used to it and like it now.
