As you've all heard, a new build is coming. This means some good things and some difficult things.

First, a good thing. This build is chock full of bug fixes. The Developers really think this build is very close to release quality. Now, while suggestions are always welcome, and will be throughout the life of the beta, from this point forward our focus is on the code defects. The features of the product that are actually broken, as opposed to those features you wish were there. We do keep all the old suggestions and review them as we start work on a new version, but the time for adding new features into this build is past.

Now, this isn't a ticket to file your suggestions as bugs. We still expect you to properly file your bugs as bugs and your suggestions as suggestions. If you need help understanding the difference, talk to Ken or John.

Another good thing that will feed right into a difficult one. The new build will be available on Connect and on ideas.live.com. That's a good thing for everyone. Except. And here comes the difficult thing.

If you are NOT currently running build .068, we are going to ask you to wait to install.

Why, you ask?

We're trying to test some of the issues surrounding the updates pushed down via the client. You'll still be required to Run as Administrator for the mandatory upgrade, and finding out what the experience will be like is one of the goals. We are going to turn on the pushed update on Wednesday, so it is only a couple of days.

However, if you are one of the testers who crash so frequently that you can't even use the product, first, I ask you to check your bug and make sure you've provided Ken everything he needs to triage the bug. I'm told that he's received a number of bugs surrounding crashes many without the logs needed and, when he asks for more data, he's not been getting many replies. We'll ask Ken or John to post something to the beta newsgroup explaining where to pull files from for crash bugs. But, again, if you are one of these people, please try the new build and let's see if it doesn't help your crashing issues.

Now, this new build is going to be available to both the public as well as you, our Managed Beta Testers. We run this build internally, so we're comfortable with allowing the public to use the product and one of the important things as this juncture is to test server load and, unfortunately, a small pool of Managed Testers is not enough to judge.

And an afterthought about the 'Run as Administrator' issue. Here's where it stands right now, as far as I have been told. Optional upgrades will not require you to Run as Administrator. There was an issue with the setup program that got launched that, we believe, was the source of issues. For Mandatory upgrades, Run as Administrator is still required.

As always, thank you for being the best beta testers you can be!

What is new?

Roaming Identity - Your display name follows you any place you sign into. Now your display picture and personal message will follow you too. If you would prefer they stayed in place you can turn this off (Tools->Options->General -> Sign In -> "Use the same display picture....")

Contact Card
- The contact card has gotten a updated look. Instead of a flip it does a slide to toggle between the Spaces and Contact information. Also no more squinting at an icon and trying to figure out what it means the actions on the card are now listed out plain and simple.

Emoticons, Winks, Backgrounds, Display Pictures - The menus have gotten an updated look. They include a recently used list and easy access to featured content so you can get new emoticons, winks, background and display pictures to use. hint: typcially in the featured section the first 4 are free.

SMS Phone Book - You now have a quick way to send SMS to a phone number or add phone numbers for your contacts. Just click the cell phone icon in them main window for a good time.

New Contact Emotion
- In 8.0 all our icons got an update but we forgot a very important one. The contact emoticon. Type msn_messenger.gif to send it.

Status Menu includes Sign Out - We noticed people look in the status menu to sign out and so ta-da now you can sign out from the status menu.

Report abuse - Here is something you will hopefully never need to use, but it is there just in case.

Vista Presentation Mode - When you are in Presentation Mode on Vista Messenger will change your status to busy so you can avoid the embarrassing situation of everyone reading your IMs! Don't worry if you want to show Messenger in your presentation you can turn this off (Tools->Options-> Personal-> My Status -> Show me as "Busy"...).

Behind the scenes changes - This release also includes changes to the "guts" of some of the features. The goal is for these changes to improve your experience. Please let us know if that is not the case.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, Msg Plus! Live isn't compatible with any build other than the build it's created for. Patchou put some code in Msg Plus! Live to make it not work with any other build apart from the version he made it compatible with.

I don't think Mess Patch is released for beta builds..

You could try A-Patch msn_happy.gif No idea if it's been updated for the newest build yet, though.

Current 8.1 users will be forced to update to the newer 8.1; 8.0 stays as is.
