I mean "disable" but not "remove" the ads element from the interface.
You know that by using mess patch or just editing the msgsres.dll file, we can remove the ads shown on the main window or messege window.
But I noticed that, after installing IE7, which cannot perfectly support some old scripts on webpages, sometimes WLM will show an error notification with "script error" on it, and with a link, like below:
http://msn.allyes.com/main/adfshow?user=MS...0&local=yes
Open the error link in firefox or some other browser, I find it's an ad. So I guess the patch just "remove" the ads from the window so they will not display, but actually they still work.

So I wonder how to disable the ads function completely.

Mess Patch disables & removes the ads. I'm pretty sure if you used Mess Patch to remove the ads, you will not get this "script error"

Almost all of the patches (and skins) remove Windows Live Messenger adverts, just as Rolando said. If you don't want to download a skin/patch you can edit msgsres.dll and there is a section in there where it has the ads, search, etc. You can remove it there if you don't want extras on your computer.
