It may be easier to just do a system restore (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore). This will get rid of most simpler viruses. Just restore to a date before you had the virus.

Even files aren't always tranfered directly now - if MSN has trouble connecting directly because of a NAT or something during a file transfer, it'll go through the MSN server.

I would reccomend a program called tcpview; it shows which process is responsible for each connection, so it would be easy to see which connections belong to MSN. You can also see which connections are created as you initiate a file transfer.

If I remember correctly, if you're using windows messenger and outlook on the same email account a little thing with all of your MSN contacts will show up in outlook.

You could also export your contacts as a .ctt file and make a nice perl script or something to parse the file into a CSV file that outlook could use.

Try the connection troubleshooter in 7.5, it'll check odd things like your messenger hosts file. Delete any reference to MSN in your firewall and re-add it just to make sure. I doubt it's the sp1 firewall...

No, of course he isn't, that's illiegal pp.gif

Try uninstalling completely and then reinstalling to a different location (E.G. C:\MSN instead of C:\MSN Messenger).

Also if you had a plugin like MessengerPlus then uninstall that as it may not be fully compatible with Windows Live Messenger.

Try going to start, run, and type msconfig

Click on the startup tab and disable all processes that are not completely necessary (particularly 3rd party MSN plugins), then restart your computer. If that solves it, then there is a process running that's interfering with MSN.

no, I remember reading that it was going to be a charge service...

I find it amusing that all of the images that MSN uses were created using "Adobe Imageready"... lol, not paint msn_surprised.gif

Ahh, hadn't thought about that

I also just found:

Are you sure you want to initiate this action with the Messenger Softphone?

as a string. Is Softphone the new service that allows you to call regular phone numbers?

Here's something new:

While taking a look at the new innards of MSN, I noticed that comments were left in a lot of files. For example, in contact.dll:

CODE
<!-- TODO: figure out how to restrict nodes with Version to always have ModificationDate -->

Also, it looks like MSN has been split up into several DLLs. Interesting... I'll post back if I figure out how to do anything useful.

Something intersting I found: A hidden menu option in msland.dll (resource 109) that says "Upgrade this contact..."

What could it mean? o.O

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stupid edit button going away after so long...

I also found this comment:

/* These styles come from the MSN 9 guidelines */

MSN 9? ooo...

File transfers worked very well in MSN 5.0.... then got dumb in 6.

There was a little progress bar in the corner of the windows and when you would hover your mouse over it it would show you the transfer speed.

They are normally stored as XML files, but are parsed to look "normal"

There are several plugins in the mess.be downloads section that change the look of the message history (how the XML file is parsed). Downloading one of these should make the files show up normally again. If you don't like the new look, then they should reinstall the default look after you uninstall.

Look carefully...

The 2 contacts in the "Mobile" group are also included in the "Offline" group, this making it exactly 300 contacts.

check your msn hosts file. It can be found in Windows > System 32 > drivers > hosts files (or somethin like that) > hosts.msn or something along those lines, I'm too lazy to check

But I can see why that program would put an entry in the hosts file that may be messing things up...

Elaborate, I don't get what you're trying to do...

You mean like so the other person can hear what you're listening to?

I believe if you figure out a way to install 2 copies of MSN messenger that somehow kept their registries seperate, then it would work. Otherwise you would need a 3rd party plugin or some sort...

If you really want, you could head over the the messenger plus forums and suggest this feature, I'm sure something like this is well within patchou's skill msn_happy.gif

It's not something that could be done without a 3rd party application.

I would reccomend "Shoot the Messenger", it was the very first solution to the problem (even before Microsoft acknowledged it!).

http://www.grc.com/freepopular.htm

You really should install sp2 though...

I actually would reccomend Perl, I coded an MSN bot using the MSN package (Check out botdepot for more info). That package takes care of all of the messy stuff. From that point, it's not hard at all msn_happy.gif

I believe there are default ddp's that you can use...

but there are also codes for free ddps (only if you were a beta tester, of course msn_happy.gif )

If it works with other people, it means the problem is on their end. They probably have an NAT Router or a firewall of some sort that's not letting you in.

Also make sure he's running the same MSN version as you.

You may wanna get rid of the link before the admins get mad at u...

Tell him to scan his computer for viruses. I like AVG Free Edition, but others on this forum have reccomended Trend Micro Housecall (a web-based scanner).

His issue looks to be different, because he said he can't get into his hotmail account either.

Does Hotmail.com load at all, or will it just not let you in?

FYI Windows XP (withoud visual themes, at a 800x600, and with some services disabled) runs pretty damn well on my Grandpa's 333mhz 64 mb of ram machine.

Windows XP is light enough. Try running your beloved mac OSX on that kind of machine msn_happy.gif
