(NOTE: This is intended for Windows vista and 7 users. those on XP do not need this fix)

http://www.thegeeklair.info/files/wlmfix.zip

Follow all instructions (those that have been through this before will already know what to do, this just simplifies the entire process)

On 6/14/2012, MS Has decided to make the update to 2011 for users running 2009 on Vista/7 a mandatory update. The requirement began hitting 5 days later on 6/19. If you want to keep 2009 on those two OSes, then use the file above. (the "fix" is a reshacked copy of msnmsgr.exe with no addons, if you use addons, you may have to reshack your own copy, here's how:)

1. Completely EXIT WLM (the process must not be running)

2. Download & Install Resource Hacker : http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

3. Navigate to WLM's directory (c:/program files/windows live/messenger) (Program files(x86) on 64 bit machines)

4. load msnmsgr.exe into Reshack.

5. Expand everythign under "Version Info" (1, 1033)

6. You should see something that looks like this:

BLOCK "StringFileInfo"
{
BLOCK "040904b0"
{
VALUE "CompanyName", "Microsoft Corporation"
VALUE "FileDescription", "Windows Live Messenger"
VALUE "InternalName", "msnmsgr.exe"
VALUE "LegalCopyright", " Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved."
VALUE "OriginalFilename", "msnmsgr.exe"
VALUE "ProductName", "Windows Live Messenger"
VALUE "FileVersion", "14.0.8117.0416"
VALUE "ProductVersion", "14.0.8117.0416"
}
}

We want to change the FileVersion and ProductVersion. Most would say to change it to reflect the version # of the latest version of 2011, but in reality, any number 15 or higher will work (the included patch is set to 99.0.8117.0416 which signs in just peachy). Change this as you please as long as it is the current version # or higher.

7. Click on Compile script, then save as per usual (File > Save). This will save the new copy of msnmsgr.exe, AND save the unedited original as msnmsgr_original.exe

8. Exit Reshacker and launch WLM.

9: Happy IMing! :-)

If this is too much for some of you and you just want your WLM 2009 back and running, you can use my already fixed file above. It only involves replacing msnmsgr.exe
