QUOTE(Gaz™ @ Feb 18 2007, 07:42 AM)
In UK law you are not allowed to mention a competitor by name, and genreally not at all, as you say, you can't say "Our product is damn right better than so and so's' but you can say "Our product is better than leading brands" and in the banking industry you can say "Our intrest rate is lower than these high street stores" With picture cards with there names on. What apple is doing, inside UK Law is fine.

Thanks for pointing that out. That's exactly how tha law was in both Canada and the US some years back but legislators in the US decided that fair competition with a new set of rules would allow for more competitive pricing in the face of rising inflation. They were right and Canada followed suit about a year later with slightly different wording in our law.

you know, you shouldnt be so picky, i agree that owning it is a whole lot different than trying it, but you asked for opinions full stop not opinions from people who are willing to spend 500 dollars buying a new OS that you probably were fine without to begin with.

Can you not read? How many times do I have to say it. I did ask for opinions from people who Own the OS Windows Vista. Go back and read at least 2 of my posts and see for yourself. Now if you don't own it, lets you and me argue in another thread not here as I once again asked.

When people just regurgitate other peoples words and fly which ever way the media wind blows I don't consider that their opinions. Like I've said before, think for your self and don't let the media make up your mind for you.

QUOTE(Zero1 @ Feb 17 2007, 08:11 AM)
UAC is generally for stupid people who don't know what they are doing with a PC. I've never had a virus on my PC because I know how to protect it and I've got common sense.

I am using OSX right now (unfortunately). It asks me to enter my password quite often. Difference between that and UAC? You can switch UAC off.

Apple do nice designing, but their OS is laughable generally and the way that they project themselves isn't 'cool', its childish.

Very well said. I find it interesting though that this point has been made on a few occasions including by me, but nobody ever comments on it. For some reason Mac lovers always argue until there is a valid counter point. Then they either change the subject or just stop posting.

QUOTE(Gaz)
So... they don't mention Microsoft's name, therefore perfectly fair
It's actually not illegal to mention your competiors name in Ads. That law was changes about 15 or 20 years ago. I can't remember the exact wording but it does allow for any person or company to mention the name of any and all competition by name so long it is not sujested that the competitors product or servive is subpar. You can however suggest that your product or service is better. It's called fair competition. (I think) or something like that. In Canada it's part of the Competition Act. The jist of the Canadian law is that you must not be misleading in your attemp to garner new business or sales.

In short... as long as what you say is not a lie then you are ok. Unfortunatly you can contradict yourself and get away with it. Which is what Apple has been doing for years. At least their commercials are good though. msn_wink.gif

Not so great but not terrible either. MTS should be upgrading the service again next year but I don't know how fast.

Edit: Tried it again and slightly different results. Latency is terrible. Thank god i'm not a gamer.

well, in second thoughts, after what willz said. i kinda like vista with it's new features, one of them that i've noticed that i kinda like this the one that allows you to control the volume of seperate apps, now that's a great feature for gamers. thing is, vista hasn't made much a visible change to the public, only major differences that an average user will notice is just new gui.

I thank you for being objective but it would be nice if you could come to your own conclusions without the aid of someone elses opinion first. It's called individuality. Don't let the media make up your mind for you. Like or dislike based solely on your own experience.

I can't believe how many people whine and complain about the lack of security and then when they get it all they do is whine and complain about it getting in the way.

If you don't like it turn it off and stop complaining about it! And if you like Mac so much better, go buy one and leave Windows to the people who actually like to customize their machines. *insert new argument here*

Some of you are talking like you've tried it but don't actually own it. If that's the case, please go back and read my original post. I would like objective opinions from people who use it all the time because it's thier OS. Not tried it on someone elses machine. And again, not a beta or rc1. As for the cancel or allow, it really is not so bad. There are only a few things it even pops up for. If it's not core you wont see it. You can turn it off as well so that's a weak argument to not upgrade.
I have not seen any posts about what is actually bad about Vista with the exception of people not liking the UAC.I strongly believe that that is brought on by the hype about it being annoying. If the hype were about the safety, which is what it is for in the first place, most people would be touting it.

So again I ask, If you don't like Vista, why don't you like it in detail. If you do, what features do you like.

Well I've lived through a tornado and an earthquake (not in winnipeg, not possible within 1500 miles of where I am living now) and the tail end of a hurricane that was only weak tropical storm strength by the time it hit where I was living at the time. The earthquake was the only one of the three that did not scare the hell out of me. It was only 5.3 on the richter scale at the epicenter. About 4.8 in Ottawa which is where I was at the time. It shook the hell out of everything but nothing was comming down.

Edit: I think I meant 4.3 aqnd 3.8. A 5.3 would knock down some older wood buildings with ease.

No, it's funny because it's well written and well acted. It's just plain funny. I agree that it is the best Mac commercial ever and far better than anything Microsoft could ever put out but..... It's a big pile of flying donkey crap!

Apple is even more full of the brown stuff than MS is. Don't believe me? How's this for giant hypocritical nonsence?

From Apples own web site: http://www.apple.com/getamac/viruses.html

[I]"Connecting a PC to the Internet using factory settings is like leaving your front door wide open with your valuables out on the coffee table. A Mac, on the other hand, shuts and locks the door, hides the key, and stores your valuables in a safe with a combination known only to you. You have to buy, configure, and maintain such basic protection on a PC.

On a Windows PC, software (both good and evil) can change the system without your even knowing about it. In order for software to significantly modify Mac OS X, you have to type in your password. You’re the decider. You approve changes to your system"

A moderate F2 will take the roof right off your house and rip whole walls off the side of large buildings. This tornado is clearly an F1 or a weak F2 at best. Believe me when I say I'm not saying the situation is any less scary for those in the area. After all, even the weakest of tornados can kill. By the way, the Fujita scale goes from F0-F5 with an "Inconceivable tornado" F6 listed at the top. Needless to say, an F6 has never been recorded.

QUOTE(kapz @ Feb 12 2007, 05:54 PM)
Score of 1-5

I'd say the graphics were a 4.5. (compared to XP)
The features are around a 3..
I was messing around with that voice crap, I said a simple sentence, "Cory is cool." It came out with "Cory in the pool"

Also the boot menu thing seems more like an installer.

I actually got that voice thing to work quite well. I even dictated a half page document. After correcting the mistakes, also using voice, it was faster than typing for me. Keep in mind I am a slow typer. Two finger Tom they call me. LOL

Am I the only one having a good experience with Vista? Those of you who are not liking it much if at all, did you do an upgrade or buy a new pc? If anyone has tried it on a Mac, how is that working for you?

The reason I'm so curious is because I remember 5 and a half years ago this was a lot like the way most people reacted to XP. It was almost 2 years before some people finally admitted that XP was better than 98. Of course it was almost 2 years before it was better. msn_tongue.gif I had a friend who said he would rather keep his ME. msn_rolleyes.gif I can honestly not think of a thing I don't like about Vista. It took me about 4 days to get used to it but now I just love it.

Edit: I should mention that I keep thousands of records and hundreds of documents and I need to find them quickly when I get a call from a customer. Windows search is far, far better than either windows or google desktop search. That alone was worth the money for me. The increase in productivity has already paid for my copy of Vista.

I too am not going to upgrade my desk but my laptop I upgrade right away. I only had 2 problems to start with. I have naorrowed it down to one. Although it is one that was not part of the original 2. Just a software that wont load. It's actually the Microsoft Lifecam software that I downloaded from thier web site which is the new Vista compatible version. Yeah right. LOL Anywho... Vista has been a dream for me. It runs smooter, faster, and has much, much better ram management than XP. This of course is my experience. Please let me know what things have been bad for you. It feels unfinished is just a blanket statement. What does it really mean?

Mac I don't want, cuz i need to use some softwares which wont work on a mac!
Vaio was what i was thinking, but i wanted model numbers of the one which were stable! I dont want to call the vaio people abt problems in hardware or something. Also does Viao comes with a bundled windows Xp or Vista? I mean i want a Simple operation system and no others softwares bundled with it to come!

Also i havnt read nything good about Vista! So should i try to get one which has Windows Xp with it?

First of all, I stand by what I said. Second, the people that have nothing good to say Vista are either set in thier ways with xp or they did an upgrade from xp/2000 and had issues. If you are buying a new mahine with vista preinstalled then you will be fine because your drivers have already been loaded and the system has been tested before being shipped. I can tell you from my experience, Vista is 1000 times better than XP. (and I did an upgrade) If you pay for XP now, you'll be sorry later when you have to shell out for the upgrade. Finally, it is possible to get a laptop shipped with nothing but the operating system and no bundled software but you have to do some major shopping to find the company that will acomidate you. It does not really matter what brand you get if you want the OS clean. You can buy any and buy the OS seperatly and do a clean install. No bundled extra anything. The good thing about a Mac though, as has been mentioned, is that you get to dual boot both OS's. And contrary to popular belief, you can right click. LOL

So now that Vista has become a reality, what do you all (meaning those of you who actually have the final/rtm/oem/retail version not rc1/2/any beta's) think of the new OS. Good, bad, terrible, great? What do you hate most about it and what do you like best about it?

I would like to ask that this topic does not become an argument for or against so much as a healthy debate on the features, strengths, and lack there of if if that's you opinion. I would also like it if this does not become a discussion about Mac vs Windows. Just Vista. Thanks and let the opinions fly!

Never mind the folder. I have no idea why Ex Beta Tester would tell you that. I send dozens and sometimes even well over a hundred emails a day. (I'm not a spammer... I send quotes to customers who requested for our custom products) Every last one of them is html but some of them are from merge forms and are text before I convert them. Just do what I said and you'll have your html mail.

I do use windows mail by the way. I have Vista.

This is the advice you need to take. Don't buy a laptop that someone else says you should buy. Let me explain... When buying a desktop you want to get the best performance you can get with what you can afford. In your case it would not matter so you would likely end up with the best you could get and be very happy with it.
Now, this is where it gets different for you at this time. You want to get a laptop, which is a toatally different kind of shopping experience, or at least it shuld be. When you shop for a laptop, price and function are not the only things to consider. You need to feel as comfortable about your choice as possible. It's more like buying a new car than it is a new computer. When you shop for a car you may decide to give up a few extras in favour of something that rides better on the road. Or the other way around. You may decide to part with comfortably smooth ride to get the mp3 cd player and power everything. When choosing a laptop you want to make sure that it's everything you want. I for instance chose a Gateway even though everyone I know said I should get a Dell and the sales guy at the store I went to said I should get HP. When I played with the Gateway in the store it just felt better to me. It fit. None of my friends or family think so but all that matters is it works for me.
In closing I reiterate, Shop and play with as many as you can but choose what fits for you. Happy shopping and don't forget to let us know what you bought.

I could just imagine what it would be like if you guys had a major weather related disastetr like a tornado, or even a major blizzard. The heavy snow in NY by the way was not a blizzard. While The NY snow was record breaking and obviously brought the area to a stand still, a blizzard is much worse because you literally can't see two feet in front of your face, Unfortunatly there are always idiots driving on hiways during blizzards. There are almost always deaths on the roads during large blizzards.
The worst part, (not withstanding the road deaths of course) is the extreme cold that usually follows directly after the storm, Temps generally drop to at least -20 (for you yanks that's 4 below)within a few hours and much colder the next day. IN canada that is. Not as bad in the notheren US.

In most of Canada that is what we call a lite dusting. Some people would not even bother brushing off their cars, just use the wipers. A Snow day? HAHAHAHA I wish we could get snow days with that little amount. About 14 days in January and 12 in February would be snow days and that's not counting any big dumps or possible blizzards.

In Winnipeg we have more snow than we've had in several years but nothing compared to this... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17042993/

You don't have the space for an imac? It's like a laptop on a stand with a stand alone keyboard. What do you plan to use as a monitor? I hate to tell you but once you figure in the monitor and keyboard, the mac mini will actually take up more space. Or were you not thinking of that?

The best advice I can give anybody is this. Don't but yesturdays news. It's wont take you that far into the future. If you can't afford better then that's the only real reason to buy such a sub-par unit. Aside from monitary holdbacks you should never settle when it comes to technology. It will only bite you in the a@noreply.gif later when you whish you had saved for just a bit longer.
