the reason they have comps on plugins and stuff are to benifit other users and you said your self what kind of comp's they have.. i have never seen a MS skinning comp...
...
so *_*-_Boy_Moreninho-_*_* you copyed ·Ixtli· work and changed it
and ·Ixtli· you grabbed microsofts program and broke the licence agreement and changed the program content.

everyones a victim.

Of course there would never be a skinning competition; that would imply that they want other people to do the designing for them. As I said, they have to stay professional, which means they couldn't loose their simple design.

Yeah, okay, everyone knows the MS version was the base of my skin, but so are all the other people who made their own skin from scratch. =)

Right now I'm going to try and email the Live Messenger Development Team and actually ask their opinion about the whole WLM skinning scene. I hope we can get some official view on this. msn_tongue.gif

I'm sorry *_*-_Boy_Moreninho-_*_* , I'm too busy to offer you support in skinning through IM. I might consider writing tutorials and such later for everyone to benefit from.

i see from both side's but you are actually steeling someone else's work yourself did you ask microsoft if you can edit the GUI of WLM? and did he ask you if he could mod your GUI?
think about it skinners... msn_wink.gif
whos ripping off who?

The Windows Live Messenger Development Team actually SUPPORT the idea of skins being made. Heck, they even had competitions to develop new Activities, and they even handed out example code for that! (as WLM was becoming a beta)

Now tell me, if they are happy for us to skin, do you expect them to hand out "blank" versions of messenger which don't have any resources which were made by the development team? Have you forgotten how extensively Windows Media Player skins have been avaliable to develop and download?

Furthermore, I desinctly remember one of the key changes to the 8.0 generation of Messenger was completely transporting all the UI code and resources into Msgsres.dll for the sole purpose of allowing skinning without tampering with the msnmsgr.exe. They want to keep it unchanged because it uses digital signatures and such so that versions of messenger will trust eachother when authenticating file transfers. The simple fact is, they had skinning in mind from the very beginning.

... but the fact still remans your all editing microsofts work without there permishion.. so ever skinner is still doing a crime msn_happy.gif

They would not have moved all the resources to Msgsres.dll if they wanted us to play with their stuff. You don't see Microsoft deliberately making their OS's easier to crack, now do you? both are instances of people tampering with microsoft "products" ,but one is treated much differently than the other.

Hmm I see where your coming from but I see it in a different point of view...

What your basically saying is that mess patch, A-patch, ect is illegal and that you don't agree with that either, yeah?
...
A Skinner has created images and additional code to improve the publics messaging experience (at there own request) If you want to stick to the rules then fine, don't download the creators skin, your choice.
...
Modifying a program that is available to the public is fine, in my eyes.. I don't see anything wrong with that... If it's being modified illegally then obviously it's because the creators are not listening to the public and implementing the options them selfs. They only have them self to blame.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've had many people comment on my skin at Deviantart and say how much they preferred my design over the default UI. Many people didn't like version 8.x from the beginning - so for skinners to give the public some variety, it allows more users to find something comfortable that they like looking at. Microsoft also has to keep a level of professionalism when it comes to design, they simply can't have radical, tricked-out UI designs if they expect corporations to actually use Messenger for buisness communication.

As for the removal of advertisements, it's not exactly the end of the world for Microsoft. They have millions upon millions of users using unmodified versions, And I'm not trying to justify that on democracy alone. Everyone knows about Patchou's Plus! , right? that changes a hell of alot about Messenger, but Microsoft isn't on his back about what it does, and that's a total gateway for removing UI elements or features.

The only thing I would see being morally wrong, is if I reverse-engeneered the programming code and borrowed their Messenger Protocols to make my own IM client. Now that would wind you up in court.

Finally, I'm not angry at *_*-_Boy_Moreninho-_*_* or anything at all. As other people have said, it's just a respect thing. I have had people ask permission in the past to copy my skin and they ripped it anyway before I could say "No". That's something that really pissed me off, as you could understand why. Sorry for the massive post! msn_cry.gif

Hey Everyone; msn_wink.gif I'm the original creator of the skin that was hacked here from Deviantart.com.
I joined here today because a kind person showed me this topic to let me know what has been happening, and to hold my own if this happens again in the future.

I hope you asked permission from the original author before ripping... I doubt it!

Dear Boy_Moreninho,

I hope you understand that it sucks (is very bad) for someone else to take advantage of someone else's hard work to make something and then take credit for it, and call it "your own". You won't learn much by replacing the images. All you really seemed to have learned is how to change text colour, and you'll need to know A LOT more than that to be a successful skinner.

I started skinning early on when there were no other skins around and no useful tutorials avaliable to help like there might be today. If you want to get better, I suggest you start with the standard Microsoft design and try to make what you want from there, because that's exactly what I did, and everything I learned was from experimenting with the UI code.

Please stop using my skin as a base for your Tribal skin or any other skins you make in the future. Hacking is not a shortcut.

I know you will try to apologize, but there is no need. I'm sure you've learned a lesson. =)
