For those who find the 8.0 version of Windows Live Messenger better than the later versions, there's an opportunity to modify the program values to avoid Microsoft's force-update (from what I think, the following versions after WLM 8.0 is what brings the trouble, given the lack of ability to store the changing names of your contacts, yourself, etc.).
The instruction for how to do so, is almost the same as with MSN Messenger 7.5. 1. Download WLM 8.0 (if you ain't got it on beforehand) from http://filehippo.com/download_msn_messenger/?1408 2. Download Resource Hacker ~ http://delphi.icm.edu.pl/ftp/tools/ResHack.zip 3. Extract the ResHack program, or just run it from the .zip file. 4. From ResHack, open the messenger exe (i.e. C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe) 5. In the left side of the screen, go to Version Info > 1 > 1033 and change the text with the following code. In the field, type: QUOTE 1 VERSIONINFO FILEVERSION 8,0,812,0 PRODUCTVERSION 8,0,812,0 FILEOS 0x4 FILETYPE 0x1 { BLOCK "StringFileInfo" { BLOCK "040904B0" { VALUE "CompanyName", "Microsoft Corporation" VALUE "FileDescription", "MSN Messenger" VALUE "FileVersion", "8.0.0812.00" VALUE "InternalName", "msnmsgr.exe" VALUE "LegalCopyright", "Copyright © Microsoft Corporation 1997-2007" VALUE "LegalTrademarks", "Microsoft® is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the U.S. and/or other countries." VALUE "OriginalFilename", "msnmsgr.exe" VALUE "ProductName", "MSN Messenger" VALUE "ProductVersion", "7.1.0820" } } BLOCK "VarFileInfo" { VALUE "Translation", 0x0409 0x04B0 } } 6. Choose "compile script" on the button above 7. Click "save" from the File-menu. 8. You're reado to go. The program will still be able to use This post has been edited by Petrenkovich: Sep 29 2007, 10:37 PM |

Why post this work-around when Microsoft has already released another version of MSN Messenger 7.0 for users, so they don't have to update to Windows Live Messenger?

Because WLM 8.0 contain specific options that aren't available in the previous versions. Unless they have build in functions such offline-messaging, combined audio/video conversations, etc. in the newly modified version 7 (in case I'm wrong)?
I didn't find either of v8.1 and 7 to be suitable, so even though many prefer version 7.5, I posted this just in case. This post has been edited by Petrenkovich: Sep 30 2007, 11:39 PM |

Yes, you have to save it to that file you're hacking.

Make sure you have completely exited WLM before trying to save. (Rightclick the tray icon and select Exit)

***EDIT***
Sorry, I tried to translate it asap after I posted this, but: Hi all. I got something to ask about this way. I got a whole different text in that directory that the example tells me to look. It is the correct directory, but the texts don't match in any way. I tried anyway (Stubborn Dutch), but it didn't work. Went over to Miranda Messenger to fix the agonizing screams I exhale. Look at the code snippet to see what I got. Hai allemaal. MessengerService.Messenger" type="win32" /> <description>MSN Messenger Service</description> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" version="6.0.0.0" processorArchitecture="X86" publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df" language="*" /> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.VC80.CRT" version="8.0.50608.0" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"></assemblyIdentity> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> <file name="lcres.dll"></file> <file name="rtmpltfm.dll"></file> <file name="lcapi.dll"> <comClass description="RTCClient Class" clsid="{F9B4BDEE-7081-476e-A09C-BF54DC18F837}" threadingModel="Apartment" /> <comClass description="LCMedia Encoding Handler" clsid="{82752950-9246-4ade-8979-824706f6f844}" /> <comClass description="LCMedia Decoding Handler" clsid="{82752951-9246-4ade-8979-824706f6f844}" /> <comClass description="LCMedia Audio Capture Filter" clsid="{4463e89d-c258-43bc-ac3e-c79321315aa4}" /> <comClass description="LCMedia Audio Encoder Filter" clsid="{b4a0d887-f92d-435a-9436-061d8a491b4f}" /> <comClass description="LCMedia Audio Decoder Filter" clsid="{c5152d5b-c81c-4317-a363-6f34d6461dbc}" /> <comClass description="LCMedia Audio Mixer Filter" clsid="{d0afd5cc-4671-4e81-acdf-5be9a0c481cd}" /> <comClass description="LCMedia Audio Render Filter" clsid="{1be61737-d564-4697-84d1-2d40c8dc7ac6}" /> <comClass description="LCMedia Audio Duplex Device Controller" clsid="{6c9ce0de-1a8f-41eb-814a-8af3d18800f8}" /> <comClass description="LCMedia Video Capture" clsid="{9fc81bd1-64f0-4e33-b510-8a540d7fadb4}" /> <comClass description="LCMedia H.26X Video Decoder" clsid="{c37439e1-73d8-49e0-a040-03964f03bae2}" /> <comClass description="Tapi RTP Source Filter" clsid="{85ee6d97-bef4-40e4-b918-1f116265d8fd}" /> <comClass description="Tapi RTP Render Filter" clsid="{5daa7d1f-bef4-40e4-b918-1f116265d8fd}" /> </file> </assembly> Ik hoop dat ik het fout heb, maar volgens mij klopt hier iets niet aan het voorbeeld. Heeft de topic-starter wel gekeken hoe het er met reshack uitziet Je hoeft niet te vragen welke versie ik gebruik, want dat staat netjes in het voorbeeld. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think the topic-starter checked this one out properly. And the version I use is stated in the code snippet. mvg w/greetz Yezpahr This post has been edited by Yezpahr: Sep 16 2009, 06:22 PM |

Heya there. A nice guide, it still works as a charm with 8.1 to. Just change the last string *VALUE "ProductVersion", "7.1.0820"* to *VALUE "ProductVersion", "9"* instead. I just tried it and and it works, so i just had to register here to tell you guys and everyone else that needs help with it.
