8.1 worked fine with Vista for me.. uninstall it and reinstall it again.
To turn off DEP on your system, run command prompt as administrator, then type:
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
See, does it work then.
For me all messenger version worked on vista, from 6-2 to WLM 8.1, got no problem with them, so msn 7 should really work

I had to uninstall 8.1 and reinstall 8.0 and then I had no problems. It doesnt matter what DEP settings I chose it just wouldnt work. I've had vista for about a week and its the worst platform I have ever used!! Bring back Win 3.1 ftw! 
I seem to have a few DEP errors with 8.1 on Vista, but it only happens when I've first installed the new StuffPlug
