Im thinking about getting a SubWoofer for my car, and i think i have an idea about the Watts and such, i just wanted to make sure.

so...

i have a 250W Amp, with currently 2 6x9s (100W RMS, 300W Max)

i have my eye on a SubWoofer in halfords, which says that it has a 400W maximum,

so my question is, would all this be fine off the same amp or would i need to get another?

Edit: also i think mine is a 2 channel Amp... but im not sure...?
Khyshen
why a subwoofer?

It'll be fine. The bigger the amp means the more sound it pumps into the speaker. Example: I have a 1500watt Speaker that's in my party boom box (which some have seen in my desktop images) Now if I hook the speakers out of that onto my 20watt out the back stereo, it'll produce sound but not as much with as a large amp. It also depends on how much load your going to put on the Amp (The more the load the hotter it'll get and the faster it'll burn out).

But I reckon it should be fine, if not later on you can always buy a bigger amp.

If your Amp is too much for your speakers then you'll be blowing speakers all the time. Talk to some Car stereo people or look it up on the net to see what people have to say about it.

Edit: Before someone calls me a Chav, I say get stuffed! I like my music it's even better when it's loud.

Thanks for that shane, big help msn_up.gif

and no khyshen, loud music does not mean im a chav, rock music is best played loud, and with bass!

Nothing wrong with subs in themselves. I've got a 300W (well, 150W RMS, 300W peak) sub on my computer, and I'm not a chav pp.gif I'd have one in my car if my car was any more powerful than it is (currently it's barely powerful enough to just move itself - I don't need anything else draining power pp.gif)

Of course, yes, there are chavs and such who have subs and thus have ridiculously loud music pouring from their cars and annoying everyone else. I don't condone their behaviour at all; but that doesn't mean that subs in and of themselves are bad.

I'm using the Logitech Z-5400s, which aren't exactly the best, but they're pretty damned good as computer speakers (plus the have two optical and one coax S/PDIF inputs along with the standard 6-channel PC audio inputs). Mum's got the Logitech Z-5500s which are around twice as powerful as the Z-5400s... Scary stuff pp.gif

My poor little Ford Fiesta probably wouldn't be able to move itself *down* a hill, let alone *up* one, with that sort of thing in it msn_sad.gif
Lukeyy19
lol poor little thing, im looking at the Ripspeed 10" Sub and Box in halfords, still just contemplating if i should go for it or not, would really like to know how it will sound first, but you cant do that msn_sad.gif

Still not bad, I got a set of X-530s for my Computer couldn't care what anyone says they produce enough sound for computer crap. If I need loud music that's what a stereo is made for.

Subs are made only for "BASS" you'll also need tweeters and a small set of speakers for pure sound and not just plain Bass. Just pure bass can give you a great headache after awhile. pp.gif
Lukeyy19
i think my comp speakers are pretty good, SpeedLink Definition 2.1 System (Subwoofer system with two satellites), they do all i need from a PC system

also Shayne as i said i have the two 6x9s already, tweeters im not so worried about.

hehe i too agree that a sub doesnt mean your a chav, but also there is a small thing ive learnt and thats a sub doesnt all of a sudden make your music in your car sound amazing, yeh its cool to feel the bass but theres more too music than that, take my car, the speakers are completely crap but i didnt really notice or think anything of it and wanted a sub to give it some oomph, but then i had a ride in my stepdads car and the sound his speakers gave out was infinitly better than mine, so for any one else out there looking to splash 100quid on a sub think about it first cos you may benifit more putting that money towards some nice decent speakers first of all

dunno if this post will be benificial to anyone just wanted to say my two cents pp.gif
Lukeyy19
thats a good, point, and i have gone off the sub woofer idea now, the speakers i currently have are really very good (45Hz - 25Mhz or something) so unless i fork out hundreds of pounds (which im not doing), im not going to get much more out of it that i already do

400W is soft pp.gif

I got an 800W Xplod 12" Sub running off a 1000W Kenwood amp in my car...

I'm looking to have to get a second battery for my audio system. It drains the single battery too much pp.gif
RebelSean
I have two of the same subs Ben, but hooked up to a 1200W xploid amp.
Ben™
Why on earth do you need 2? Do you even have a trunk left, or is it now a very large sub enclosure?
RebelSean
Because I love the bass, and it's competition around here pp.gif.

1 Sub is quite enough to feel the bass. haha.

And it sounds like a silly competition to me. Sure, we have sound-offs here, but its not a "lets see who can out-do each other in regards to quantity of equipment".

Sometimes i wish i could put my sounds system thats connected to my computer onto my car.
i currently have 11 speakers hooked up, with 2 subs and a 5.1 surround card with a 5.1 to 7.1 transformer.

i'm heavily into DnB at the moment so it's great for that sorta stuff msn_happy.gif

One sub IS enough to feel it with a good enough amp, but as you said, sound offs are not about quantity, they're about the noise -- so wouldn't it make sense that 2 subwoofers would be louder than one? Provided both subs are getting twice as much power as the single sub set up.

Remember people that maximum output practically means nothing -- it's all about the RMS.

haha, I'm never to going to put a fat old speaker system into any car I get - my brother spent £400 on one, two days later his car died, and the speakers were ruined as well!

You should get another, your 400w amp, is actually more around 200-250w, 400w is the peak reached in the lab, right before blow out.
You'll never reach the 400 if you tried. Now an 800w, probably puts out about 500-600...
so your better off getting another one.

P.s. Whats a Chav???

Just because a 400W amp won't reach 400W isn't grounds to buy a new one unless he happens to need the full 400W. You could say the same about an 800W amp - it won't reach 800W so it's not good enough. Same applies with computer PSUs. Very few are capable of outputting even close to their sticker values, but that doesn't mean a 500W PSU "isn't good enough" unless you actually need 500W (in which case a 600 or 700W PSU would be better "just in case", and because most devices don't like operating at maximum capacity 24/7, but that's a different matter).

P.s. Whats a Chav???

Wikipedia is your friend.

Also, I have this overwhelming urge to drop the full upper-case in your name. Judging by the fact that your name and your first thread title were in upper-case, I can only assume that you abused your caps lock button and didn't even give what you'd typed a cursory glance.

yeah but he's got a pretty good subwoofer, and one amp is always weak.

-i hate wiki's (personal)
-drop the caps if you want, whatevers cool (THIS IS HOW I EMAIL, & IM MY EMPLOYEES, force of habit sometimes)
